Mounting hints and tricks

The most important for mounting a telemark binding on skis is the right setting of the pin line. But start with the center line, this is the middle line of the ski and should be marked about 50 cm long around the binding mounting spot. The pin line of the binding is corresponding with the chord center on the ski. The chord center is the full length of the ski (measured trom tip to tail including radius; means from highest point on tip to highest point on tail) divided by 2 (i.e. 193 cm:2 = 96.5cm). This length will be marked on the ski from tip or tail and means it is the middle of the ski. Common bindings call this the toe top. It is a classical formula and works on all kind of ski types. For fine tuning you can set up the chord center up and down by 6mm  (see more about pin lines). After marking the chord center on the ski you can set the plate now according to the binding type pin line with the side markings of the plate on the ski. Use the length wise carves to place the plate exactly. Fix this position with a hand clamp slightly and control all measurements again.  Mark the holes now with a fat pen so you can set the puncher exactly in the middle of the round marks and you have an easy and exact mounting of the tele booster plates. The heel plate has a distance of 8cm from the main plate and fits then most of the shoe sizes (36-46, ) Also here the help of a hand clamp is very usefull to set the heel piece on the right place… you can even punch directly into the hole if you are experienced enough. Always use a wax scraper on the surface of the ski to avoid any scratches.

steel inserts or one way wood screws..?

This is a main question and should be decided latest after you have drilled the holes for the plates. I have best experience with the quiverkiller.com steel inserts made in Denver, Colorado/USA. To mount the telebuddy plates directly with steel inserts is allowing you to change the plate position any time for different bindings or to tune up your ski performance for hard & groomed piste conditions or back country free skiing. Any mounting of the plates with wood screws will tear a bit on the top sheet construction and if you  tight up the screw the second time in the same hole/thread it will not hold as good as the first time … thats why I strongly recommand you to mount the plates with the quiverkiller.com inserts. This inserts are threaded in and glued in with epoxy and experts are saying that this connection is twice as strong as with the regular inserts. Also it helps for skis which have no good material in the center of the ski where you want to place the plates (mostly around the center hole line).

You will get the M5 inox screws to mount the plates onto the inserts for free… just let me know when you order… the inserts you may order directly with www.quiverkiller.com… you would need 4 pieces by one front plate, 8 for a pair of skis… the heel pieces can be fixed with the ordinary screws because you can adapt them with the inner nuts easy to different positions and don’t need this special materials…

Mounting a Meidjo large or a 22designs Outlaw NTN X large

These large sized bindings need an extra heel piece for bigger shoe sizes… on the small Meidjo Binding the shoe size norm starts with Mondopoint 22.5 to 26 and on the Outlaw with 23 to 26.0 for Scarpa & Crispi boots and 23 to 25.5 for Scott & Garmont boots… the small bindings of each type can be mounted with the standard heel piece… the Meidjo needs for the intermediate preloader piece a small nut in the first heel piece (small and large)… the Outlaw NTN X small works fine with the standard heel piece…

 single heel versions above

Two short heel pieces are needed for all shoe sizes above 26.5 – 31 (Meidjo) and above 26.0 (Outlaw with Scott & Garmont), 26.5 (Outlaw with Scarpa & Crispi) because then the standard heel piece is not enough long for the mounting of the heel… for Meidjo add a nut in the first heel piece… the second heel piece will be placed according to the shoe size…

double heel versions below

… both bindings creates big forces from the heels and they need to be fixed from slot hole 6 backwards (see drawing below, green power square) or in a middle position (red power square with additionl screw) where you can shift to both sides… your choice..

Schraube)

Mounting a TTS Telemark Tech System

The TTS is located on pinline 1 and slot hole one power square… this binding produces a lot of heel resistance due to the construction (2 front pieces) and it is necessary to mount if different. See the different power squares on the drawing below… use for the TTS the green power square… if you want to be able to use with the same drilling holes the Meidjo, Outlaw and Rottefella Freeride, then use the red power square… in this case give the plate an additional back screw (marked with red cross).

Mounting a Rottefella NTN Freeride

The Rottefella binding has a stable base but is also located on the back of the plate… if you don’t use it with other brands then fix it also on the 6 slot hole (green power square)…

Mounting a 7TM

This binding is to be released by this winter and it should come with a stable base and it is located anyway on slot hole 6 😉

Mounting a Bishop BMF-R/3

Bishop bindings are using the 6 hole schemata from 22 designs… please check their website for the mounting of the bindings… when you do like you are told there (www. bishopbindings.com), you can then place the telebuddy plates on top of the schemata sheet (use template front right screw marked with :. or … and you have the position for the telebuddy plates… place it on the center line of the ski, punch and drill on the slut holes Nr. 6 (last hole against the back of the plate)… Bishop does not use anymore the classical pin line and goes from the mid of shoe to the front…

If you have already a telebuddy NTN/NTTN plate drilled on your skis shift it to pin line Nr. 6… there you are according to Bishop if you measure from “back to front”.

Mounting a Kreuzspitze Telealp Binding

The “bello” italian Kreuspitze binding is using the G3 template with 6 holes. This template is already mirrored on the 7 hole 75mm+NTN plate, but only with 4 holes… the binding body is tuned to have the less material possible… that leads to very special mounting screws for this binding, which have to be produced specially… therefore the higher price on the screw sets… to put the binding on the right pinline use line 2 and the hole schemata of 3 (3 points marking on the hole).

2nd ski kit

Use the booster base plate as a 2nd ski kit and mount it on your favorite skis… you can use with one binding different skis… this is why you get 2 sets for a better price… if you take 3 or more sets the price goes down again…

Power square

The central fixations with the appropriated side length slots has 7 positions (the NTN/low tech version has only 6 positions)… all positions are corresponding with the individual pin lines of the different tele bindings…the 4 fixation points are creating a small power square where all the forces of the interface of ski and binding are concentrated … due to the small distances all forces are hold back in this square which is very firm fixed to the ski… this guarantees an unchanged flexing character of your skis…The center line of skis can be sometimes not be made for the fixation of screws (soft core)… you feel it and you see it when you drill the holes… in such case you can create the power square by using only the side slot holes but in front and back (means hole 1 and 6/7) on both sides of the plates.

Pin lines

To adapt the different bindings with its unique pin lines to the skis you simply drill the holes on each slot on the same positions… means for binding 4 you are using the 4. hole of each slot line… if you change your bindings you can now easy unscrew the 4 ski screws, shift the plate on the ski to the new position and thight it again… of course the plate is not in the same position again, but the ski holes are… this multiple adaption is perfect for rental shops, the customer can ride the same ski with different bindings and figure out his best set up… For sure you can use it also to shift the pin line forwards or backwards from the original line by steps of 6mm to influence your edge power more in tip or tail according to to your personal needs …During the last year some manufacturers brought new bindings out on the market by using the same templates… therefore combinations are possible of 75mm and NTN binding types… please look carefully in the list of the two different plates for the relevant pin lines..;-)

Telemark-binding-power-plate

The pin lines are cutted out of each side of the plate… that helps a lot to place it accurate on the ski… you also find a cut in the middle of the plate on top and back for an exact middle position… the 75mm + NTN Telebuddy Plate pin lines are defined from front to the back (point 1 to point 7) as follows:

1. Rottefella NTN Freeride 2012 –

2. 22designs Hammerhead (Outlaw X works on the same template but shift to pinline 4)

Screws

We use only inox screws…there are torx screws with special flat heads and regular hexagon socket screws… the small sliding nuts for the heel pieces are also out of inox steel… the torsional moment, screw torque is 5-6 Nm… after a first mounting this screws have to be checked for a firm seat… the ski screws are not out of inox steel and should be mounted with any kind of thread security agent… we suggest you not to take a serious one, just an ordinary wood glue so you can unscrew for a new pin line position.

Schrauben
